A call to support Italian air transport workers struggle

The extraordinary outrageousness suffered by the Alitalia workers imposes a general reflection about how quickly in Italy the relationships between companies and trade unions are worsening. In the Alitalia case we face a situation in which a company, CAI [the private company that is going to buy the assets of Alitalia, since the debts will be left to a state owned company and will be charged on the ratepayers], is violating the basic ethical principles, is instrumentally blackmailing workers that are already facing an extreme uneasiness and a deep fogginess about their future, is breaking and befooling every recognized solidarity criteria and is overriding the most basic democratic rules, trade union representation rights and not respecting already signed agreements.

Despite this picture, this company is strongly supported by the Italian Government and will benefit our public money to stand and satisfy its financial interests and needs. For the Government and the employers association Confindustria, Alitalia is now the laboratory to establish new collective bargaining models and trade union representation mechanisms that will be more disadvantageous for workers and marked by authoritarianism: Alitalia workers are like cavies for such an “experimentation”. Employers Confindustria is trying to impose a “take this or quit” logic, without any real discussion: this unacceptable both from a trade union and an ethical perspective.

Signing this call we express our full solidarity to the Italian air transports workers in in struggle against this logic. The Alitalia labor dispute is a serious attempt to design a new pattern that is already affecting all of the Italian workers and it must be faced joining all of the workers, all of the precarious people, all of the students and the social movements of the country, with a common target: to defeat the authoritarianism and the arrogance of Confindustria and of the Government, making a wide, collective and democratic reply possible, involving all of the sane actors of our country
